Working on Campus: A Q&A with Adam Throne ’19
Many students at Carleton receive Federal work study support through financial aid support. Over the summer before a student’s first year, they can fill out the Student Work Preference Form, and Carleton will do a great job matching them with a job that fits their interests and skills.
During my first year, I worked in the campus post office sorting student packages and sending mail.help homework online I enjoyed the flexibility of the hours and the relaxed environment in the post office. This year, I am working as a PSF (basically a tutor) and a grader for one of the introduction to Physics courses. I am also working as a blogger!
To give a better idea of some of the available jobs on campus, I interviewed Adam Throne ’19 about his student employment experience.
Jacob: What jobs have you held on campus?
Adam: I have worked at PEPS my entire time at Carleton.
J: What do you like about working on campus?
A: It provides a great opportunity to develop skills that I would otherwise not be able to develop through classes, I am able to build personal relationships with faculty and professors, and I am able to challenge myself to manage time well. It is also an easy way to make money without having to leave campus and hours are generally flexible around my own schedule. In my job we have also started workshops with the Career Center that focus on finding employment after Carleton.
J: What is your overall impression of student employment at Carleton?
A: Student employment at Carleton is well-organized and plentiful. If you are looking for an opportunity to work, you can certainly find one somewhere on campus. The business office does a good job managing funds, and there is easy control of payments through the Hub. I strongly recommend picking up a job if you have spare time or need a way to boost your resume.
J: What is your dream campus job?
A: My dream campus job is to be Stevie P. because his office is extremely nice.
Thank you, Adam!
Jacob is a potential physics, math, and/or geology major (he’s indecisive) who appreciates the occasional anthropology or English class. Growing up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin has made it easy for Jacob to adapt to the Northfield winters, during which he likes to ski and go traying. In more agreeable weather Jacob enjoys going on outings with CANOE, the outdoors club, and playing Ultimate Frisbee on the Gods of Plastic, Carleton’s DIII men’s ultimate team.
